Into the Desert...

Immediately after His Baptism, Jesus went to the desert for 40 days:

At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. -Mark 1:12-13, NAB

If Jesus had simply come down to Earth under the protection of God the Father, it would not have meant as much; however, He faced temptation, just like you and I, as He went out into the desert.  In this way, Christ was both fully God and fully man.

As soon as Christ was Baptized, He was forced to face temptation.  Satan knew that he had a new adversary in Jesus and wanted to do everything in his power to try and stop Him.  The same can be true for us as well.  The moment we accept Christ into our lives, we will surely feel Satan against us.

When we remain in the fallen world, without Christ in our lives, Satan doesn't have to spend a lot of time on us - we are already doing what we wants us to do.  But, when we begin to turn our lives toward God, he will do everything he can to turn us back around.

One thing I have noticed is that I seem to face more obstacles as I grow closer to Christ.  The further down the path to holiness I go, the more I face stumbling blocks.  In fact, sometimes, that is exactly how we know we are going down the right path.  Look at the lives of most saints - most of them faced greater temptations than any of us could ever imagine.

If you have given your life over to Christ, you will surely face more temptation than you ever have.  It is not if you will be tempted, but when.  When temptation comes your way, know that you are now Satan's enemy, realize that this means you are probably on the right path, and turn to the Holy Spirit to guide you and give you strength.  Jesus went out into the wilderness, faced temptation head on, and overcame Satan.  What will you do when you reach the wilderness?  Will you take the path of the sinner or the saint?
