The Mustard Seed...

From a tiny seed grew a mighty kingdom:

(Jesus) said, "To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade."  -Mark 4:30-32, NAB

In another parable from Jesus, He describes how the Kingdom of God is like a small mustard seed that grew into a very large plant.  Like the mustard seed, the Church began from very humble beginnings, but has grown immensely since.

The Church began with one Man and His mission - Jesus Christ.  From there, He sent out the twelve Apostles to spread the word.  It continued to multiply, and it is now estimated that there are over 2 billion Christians around the world (source).

One Man (one God) and His closest 12 followers changed the face of the world.  The love of Christ has spread to virtually every nation and every corner of the earth.  But, it didn't happen solely by the work of those first men.  It spread because they passed it on to others, who passed it on to others, who passed it on, and so on.

Our primary duty, as good Catholics and Christians, is to continue spreading the Good News.  2 billion may seem like a lot of people, but let's not stop there.  Why not 3 billion?  4 billion?  We are not done until we can say that every man, woman, and child shares our love for Jesus Christ.

The Kingdom of God, what began as a mustard seed, has continued to grow for the past 2000 years into the Church we know and love today.  For centuries, our ancestors spread the love of Christ with the world.  Now, it's our turn.
