Power Over Death...

Christ not only had power over His own death, but the death of others as well:

One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live." He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him... People from the synagogue official's house arrived and said, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?"

Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid; just have faith." ...When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, "Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep." And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out.

He took along the child's father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!" The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. (At that) they were utterly astounded.  -Mark 5:22-24,35-36,39-42, NAB

If we read to quickly, the story from Mark 5 will get a little confusing.  Between these verses is another story (that will be covered another day), and we must look closely to get today's full narrative.

Jesus was teaching along the sea when Jairus, a synagogue official, approached Him about his daughter.  Jairus' daughter was deathly ill, and he needed Jesus' help.  By the time they reached her, she was already dead.  Of course, everyone assumed that they were too late.

Just as the people began to cry and wail in sadness, Jesus tried to calm the people by telling them the little girl was asleep.  Their reaction: laughter.  Despite their laughter, Jesus took the couple inside to see their daughter.  He commanded her to rise, and she immediately got up.  Jesus brought her back from the dead.

Almost 2000 years ago, Jesus conquered death, yet it is still our greatest fear.  Most people cling so tightly to their lives, even some Christians, but, if Christ did truly conquer death, what do we have to fear?  Nothing.

Through Christ, we have the gift of eternal life.  While our sinful lives will lead to the death of our earthly bodies, we have the hope for an eternal in heaven with God.  All it takes is a little faith.
