Jesus Feeds 4,000...

Again, Jesus miraculously feeds the people:

In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat,a he summoned the disciples and said, "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."

His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?"

Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?"

"Seven," they replied. He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd. They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also. They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over—seven baskets. There were about four thousand people.  -Mark 8:1-9, NAB

Some may ask, "Didn't we hear this story already?  And, wasn't it 5,000 people?"  Well, in Mark 6, we heard the story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people, and today, in Mark 8, we read that He has fed them again.

As Catholics and Christians, we are taught to trust in God, for He will provide.  This story, where Jesus repeats the miracle of feeding a multitude of people, shows us that God providing for us is not a one time occurrence - He will continue to provide, time and time again.

God also knows exactly when to provide.  It has been said, "God will never give us more than we can handle," and just as the people were ready to collapse from hunger, Jesus provided.  True, He had allowed them to go three days without eating, and this surely stretched their faith in Him, but their hunger did not go unnoticed.

Once again, the disciples were beginning to show a lack of faith, despite the miracles that had seen Jesus perform already, and, just as they were at their limit, God came through to provide for them in a miraculous way.  We, too, must learn to have patience and trust that God will provide.  We may be hungry, but God will come through when the time is right.
