Are We Really Listening?...

Speaking plainly to Peter, James, and John, they still did not understand what Jesus was saying:

As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.  -Mark 9:9-10, NAB

Just after the Transfiguration, as Jesus, Peter, James and John were heading back down the mountain, He asked them not to tell anyone about it until after He had been raised from the dead.  Dumbfounded, they just looked at each other.

Jesus had performed a number of miracles already, including raising people from the dead, yet three of His closest followers still did not understand what He meant.  Their mind was not even open to such a possibility.  Even when something is easy to understand, if we do not see it as a possibility, we cannot accept it.

There are times that we can be just as stubborn.  We are facing a challenge and pray fervently about it.  We wait and wait for an answer.  After awhile, we get upset because the answer does not come.  Or, did it?  Were we truly listening?  Is it possible that God offered us an answer, but, because our heart was not open to that answer, we never noticed?

Why do we not recognize God answering our prayers?  I wholeheartedly believe that, many times, it is because we do not get the answer that we are looking for.  We pray to God, expecting a certain answer, but, when we do not get that answer, we assume that He is either not listening or not responding.  In reality, we are the ones not listening.

As we read through Scripture, we come across passages like this that seem pretty inconsequential.  Why would this even be included?  Because, it's important.  When we truly study Scripture, we pick up on these little nuances.  When we open up to what God is telling us, in prayer, Scripture, or otherwise, a whole new depth to our faith opens up in return.

To hear God, we need to start listening - not for the answer we want to here, but for the truth.  God speaks to us through Scripture, answered prayers, and a host of other ways.  If we don't hear Him, it is not because of a limitation on His ability to speak to us, but on our ability to truly listen.  Open your heart, and you will hear Him loud and clear.
