Follow the Commandments...

Building upon an earlier verse, Jesus tells us to follow the Ten Commandments:

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.'" -Mark 10:17-19, NAB

Yesterday, we read in Mark 10:17-18 that God is good.  Jesus finishes by answering the man's question.  When the man asked Jesus the key to eternal life, Jesus told him to follow the Ten Commandments.

Online Bible Verses

Recently, I added a few new sections and pages to the site.  One page, entitled "Catholic Ten Commandments," looks at the differences between Catholic and other interpretations of the Ten Commandments.  For more information, go to Topics > Catholic Life > Ten Commandments.  Now, on to today's verse.

Replying to His follower, Jesus gives us step 1 to find the path to eternal life (we'll cover step 2 tomorrow).  Notice that He tells us the importance of following the Ten Commandments.  This is different than what you will hear in some mainstream Christian circles.  In the Catholic Church, however, we recognize the important role the Ten Commandments plays in our lives.

Some will claim that Catholics try to earn their way to heaven through good works and following the Commandments.  This is not true.  No one earns a spot in heaven; it is only by God's grace that we get there.  Yet, Jesus tells us to follow the Ten Commandments.  Why?  Because they are just as relevant today as they were back then.

Tomorrow, we will explore more about God's saving grace that we receive through Jesus Christ, but for today, let's acknowledge the importance of the Ten Commandments.  They are not simply old rules that only applied to the ancient Jews; they are a guide for us to live by, even today.
