Destruction of the Temple...

The Temple would not stand for much longer:

As he was making his way out of the temple area one of his disciples said to him, "Look, teacher, what stones and what buildings!"

Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be one stone left upon another that will not be thrown down." -Mark 13:1-2, NAB

The great symbol of the Jewish faith, where they worshiped and paid homage to God, was destroyed within decades after Christ's death and resurrection.  Why did this happen?  Aren't the Jews God's chosen people?  Don't they hold a special place in His heart?

Online Bible Verses

Yes, the Jewish people held, and continue to hold, a special place in God's heart.  He had made a covenant with them (many, in fact), and He hoped that they would live up to it.  When they failed, once again, God had to punish Israel.

Some do not like God's destructive side, but God does not destroy anything out of enjoyment.  He is not a little boy with a magnifying glass frying ants on the sidewalk.  Instead, His actions are about discipline.  As God the Father, He needs to remain firm in His punishments of us.

Parents cannot threaten to discipline their child yet fail to follow through.  Once kids realize that their parents are just making idle threats, they will not listen at all.  To get a child's attention - and their respect - a parent has to punish a child, just as they said they would.  With Israel, God was doing exactly that.

God does not want to punish us, in the same way that all parents hate punishing their children, but it is a necessary part of our story together.  We, too, will face judgment, one day, and we must not take it lightly.  God did not take it lightly on Jerusalem, and He will not take it lightly on us.
