Making the Most out of Life...

Are you living your life to the fullest?

You have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears. -James 4:14, NAB

We go through periods in our life when we question our own mortality.  This past week, while writing about various verses from Mark 13, death and the coming judgment came up frequently.  Then, a neighbor unexpectedly passed away, and I was faced with our mortality once again.  It left me thinking about my own life - and death - and whether I was making the most out of it.

Life is short.  It can be here today but gone tomorrow.  Not knowing when we will die, or when we may lose our loved ones, we must take each moment we have and live life to its fullest.  Doing anything else just seems to be a waste of our most precious gift.

How can we live life to its fullest?  By serving God in even the smallest ways; by telling the people how much we love them - every chance we get; and by realizing that every second we have is precious, not to be wasted.  The little things we do can add up to one giant, happy life.

While it is important to make the most out of our lives, we must not hold onto it too tightly.  I love living life, but I am more excited for what awaits us beyond this life.  Ultimately, then, our goal is not what we can accomplish in this life, but how we can prepare for the next.  Through prayer, the Sacraments, and living the Greatest Commandments - loving God and loving people - we can do just that.

My wife told me, just today, that if she were to die tomorrow, she would die happy.  She is happy with what she has accomplished and the life we have lived together already.  Life has brought her happiness, but truly, it is the peace that she finds in the Lord - hope for what is to come - that makes her life seem complete.

Does your life feel complete?  Are you living life to its fullest?  Enjoy your life in every way you can; it will be gone before you know it.  This life may be a puff of smoke, but an eternity with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit will last forever.
