The Coming Kingdom...

Jesus knew that His last hours were upon Him:

Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. -Mark 14:25, NAB

There are a number of interpretations of this verse, but one thing that everybody can agree on is that Christ was foreshadowing His death - not at some distant time in the future, but in the very near future.  He knew that He only had a short time left.

Christ's Passion is set to begin.  He has just finished one last, important act - instituting the Eucharist - before it all begins.  He has now set the stage for the final act - His Passion on the cross.  This would be the last time that He would taste wine on His lips.

The coming days would not be easy for Christ, but He knew that it was necessary.  To pave the way for His coming Kingdom, He had to first lay down His life.  Before He could be lifted high as a King, He had to be stricken low like a criminal.  Eventually, Christ will come again, and I'm sure the wine will flow.

One day, when Christ comes again, I hope that we can share a cup of wine with Him, but until that time, we can enjoy a cup of wine with Him each week at Mass.  Christ's real presence in the Blessed Sacrament brings it to a reality.  We don't have to wait for the Second Coming to enjoy a cup of wine with Our Lord.

Christ's Kingdom is coming.  We may not know the day or time, but we know that we will celebrate with Him when it happens.  Until then, may we enjoy the grace that comes from the Blessed Sacrament, through the bread and wine, Christ's body and blood.
