A Light for My Path...

Catholic Bible studies can help us to better understand Scripture - leading us to a stronger faith:

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. -Psalm 119:105, NAB

Summer is over for some as kids are beginning to head back to school.  Many people have "taken the Summer off" to focus on spending time with their family, but with the school year beginning again, parish activities will soon pick up, including Catholic Bible studies.  If one is available in your parish, I encourage you to attend.

Working in the Catholic publishing industry, I have been blessed to be exposed to a number of great resources (which I will not promote here) for studying the Bible and Catholicism in general.  These great resources can teach us a lot about our faith and beliefs as Catholics, and I hope you have the opportunity to take part in one.

The studies cover a variety of topics.  Some cover the Bible in general, looking at the Bible as a narrative story.  Others may pick a certain book or theme from the Bible.  Some may simply cover Church history - more fun that you might imagine.  Others look deeper at basic spirituality.  Whatever interests you, there is probably a study out there for you.

Why should you take part in a Bible study?  Because understanding Scripture is an important part of our faith, as we read in 2 Timothy:

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.  -2 Timothy 3:16-17, NAB

Studying Scripture should be a regular part of our daily lives, just like prayer should be.  In fact, that is why I publish these Daily Bible Verses, to help people get in the habit of studying Scripture everyday.  If nothing else, it forces me to do the same.

You don't necessarily have to spend hours every day with a Bible in hand - no one said that you have to become a scholar in Biblical theology - but we are called to know and understand Scripture, at least on some basic level.  If you give just 10-15 minutes a day to Bible studies, or 1-2 hoursr each week, you will be amazed at the impact that it will have on your life.

It can be hard to understand parts of Scripture on our own; that is where Catholic Bible studies come in.  Some of the greatest modern, Catholic thinkers have put together excellent studies that anyone can understand.  Some even come with full multimedia CDs and DVDs - taking traditional Bible studies to the next level.

How can you take part in one of these studies?  Well, the first place to look is the parish bulletin and calendar.  If you do not have one at your local parish, do not be afraid to check surrounding parishes - you're always welcome to join.  Or if you find a study on a topic that you like, check the publisher's website; many of them have interactive maps to find studies near you.

How much time do you have to devote to a study?  Some of them can last 24 weeks or more, but some are only 6-8 weeks long.  How often you meet is up to the Bible study leader.  Some meet weekly; others meet once or twice a month.  Some Catholic Bible studies are actually given as one day or weekend seminars.  You can go through an entire study in just a day or two.

I encourage you to find a local study in your area.  Catholic Bible studies can greatly enrich your life and faith, while helping you become a part of your parish community.  Studying Scripture is an important part of our daily faith journey, and a Bible study can help guide you on the right path.
