Jesus Gave Himself...

St. Paul tells us that Jesus gave Himself willingly for our sins:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins that he might rescue us from the present evil age in accord with the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. -Galatians, 1:3-5, NAB

From the very beginning, Christ's mission was a resuce mission.  He was sent to save us from our sins on the cross.  Sin and temptation surround us, but we can find salvation through our Lord.

As St. Paul begins his letter to the Galatians, he reminds them of the root of our faith.  The Galatians were being taught false teachings and a false Gospel, so St. Paul wanted to begin back at square one again.  He laid the foundation for the rest of his letter by stating Christ's original purpose.

The world around us is full of false teachings, including some by those who call themselves Christians. We must be careful not to go astray from what we know to be true.  In our own minds, we must refocus our faith on its most basic but amazing concept: Jesus willingly died on the cross so that we might be saved.

Sure, it was the Father's will that Christ would save us from our sins, but Jesus still had to make the choice.  He was given many opportunities to save Himself, but He bravely faced one of the most horrific, torturous punishments that man has ever known.  Each swing of the hammer led to a choice, and Jesus chose us.

As you go out into the world today, remember that Jesus gave Himself for us, so when the opportunity presents itself, show Jesus that you choose Him, as well.  Let your words and actions show that you choose to be a Christian willingly and openly.  He died on the cross for our sins - He chose us.  All that He asks in return is for us to choose Him, as well.
