False Gospels...

The Galatians had begun following false teachers and a false Gospel:

I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by (the) grace (of Christ) for a different gospel (not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. -Galatians, 1:6-7, NAB

St. Paul was amazed by how quickly the Galatians had lost faith in the true Gospel message and started down a different path.  They were turning their back on the work of Christ and instead, following false teachings about what it takes to be saved.

In other letters, St. Paul usually said a prayer of thanksgiving for those he was writing to, but with the Galatians, he skipped all of that.  There was little to be thankful for.  He could not thank God for their faithfulness because they had little faith.

Writing to the Galatians, St. Paul speaks of a different Gospel, but there is no such thing.  There is only one true Gospel.  The Galatians, however, no longer believed it with all of their heart.  False teachers had come in and led them astray.

Does any of this sound familiar?  We are surrounded by "wise" men and women that are teaching us a number contradictory things.  False religions, atheism, and even Christian denominations that have skewed the truth over time threaten our way of life as Catholics.  At times, it can be hard to separate out the real Truth from all the other truths being taught.

Many have followed the path of the Galatians - led astray by false teachers.  The United States continues to see a decline in practicing Catholics despite the vast number of Catholic immigrants coming into the country.  Many have turned their back on Christ completely and begun to follow false teachings.  Truly, the country is in a sad state.

As we continue through Galatians, it should be interesting to see how much of St. Paul's message from 2,000 years ago will apply to today.  Contrary to popular belief, we will probably find that St. Paul's teachings are just as revelant today as they were two millenia ago.
