Stand Up for Freedom...

St. Paul and Titus resisted the false paths to salvation:

Moreover, not even Titus, who was with me, although he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised, but because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, that they might enslave us - to them we did not submit even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain intact for you. -Galatians 2:3-5, NAB

Once again, we see the recurring theme of Galatians: St. Paul teaching the Galatians about Christianity and the Mosaic Law, especially the rite of circumcision.

The Galatians were being convinced by the Judaizers that circumcision was a necessary part of salvation.  Without it, they could not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  This false teaching was leading the Galatians astray and sparked St. Paul to write this letter.

St. Paul speaks of freedom - freedom from the laws of man.  His opponents were doing everything they could to stop him, including sending in spies.  St. Paul and his companions continued to resist, regardless of the pressure they faced.

The Judaizers promised freedom through circumcision, but they were actually offering slavery to the laws of man.  Only through Christ can we find true freedom, and St. Paul was trying to help the Galatians find it.  He would not give up.  He would not let them have their freedom stripped away.

What the Judaizers were preaching sounded good.  But it wasn't.  Just because something sounds good does not make it correct.  The world today is full of false teachings that sound good, but they are still false teachings.  I know; I used to follow many of them.

As the Catholic Church, we need to continue to stand up against the false teachings of this world, just as St. Paul did so long ago.  In the United States, freedom is our rallying cry, but in reality, our freedom is beginning to slip away.

Let's stand up for freedom.  Let's boldly profess the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The world may do everything it can to stop us, but we have a very important ally to help us: God.  And as it says in Romans:

If God is for us, who can be against us? -Romans 8:31, NAB
