Our Different Missions...

Each one of us is called to a different mission, even Ss. Peter and Paul:

...when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter to the circumcised, for the one who worked in Peter for an apostolate to the circumcised worked also in me for the Gentiles... -Galatians 2:7-8, NAB

Again, St. Paul is speaking of the circumcised (Jews) versus the uncircumcised (Gentiles).  He tells us that they are called to these different missions by God Himself.  Entrusted with these missions, would the Galatians continue to question them?

St. Peter had been preaching to the Jews since Christ had first named him an Apostle (see Matthew 10:1-4).  St. Paul, on the other hand, was persecuting Christians until he was converted on the road to Damascus (see Acts 9), and his conversion made him a perfect candidate to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles.

The important part to recognize about Ss. Peter and Paul's different missions is that they were doing the work God called them to.  They were using their unique gifts and experiences to bring the Gospel to a specific group of people.  Sure, there may have been some overlap of efforts, but primarily, they each had a different calling.

What is your calling?  What is your mission?  Knowing what Christ is calling you to do - including who to preach to - is the first (and probably most important) step toward a successful ministry.  Ss. Peter and Paul knew their roles in the Church.  Do you?

As a convert, I can relate to those on the edges of Catholicism.  They may have questions similar to the ones I once had.  Now, as someone who studies the theology of our faith pretty regularly, I can answer many of those questions with confidence.  Based on my past experiences and current skill set, this is my calling; this is what God wants me to do.

What are some skills that make you unique?  Where do you come from?  Are there opportunities to evangelize right where you are now?  Making your evangelization efforts an extension of who you are already will make it much more natural - and much more effective as well.

We each have to accept our different missions from God.  We may see another's mission and be jealous, from time to time, but our own missions are just as important.  We each have a role to play in the Church.  Some roles may get more glamour and attention than others, but we must stick to the mission given to us.

Do the work God has called you to do.  Reach the people God has asked you to reach.  Accept the mission given to you with open arms, just as Christ accepted His on the cross.
