Be Mindful of the Poor...

One of St. Paul's greatest desires was to serve the poor in the community:

Only, we were to be mindful of the poor, which is the very thing I was eager to do. -Galatians 2:10, NAB

Serving the poor is one of the primary tasks that we are called to do as Christians.  We must serve those less fortunate than ourselves.  Even for those Christians facing financial difficulties of their own, they should help their brothers and sisters in need.

Much of Jesus' time was spent with the poor.  He did not preach solely to kings and royalty.  He did not focus His work on the rich.  In fact, He often spoke about the troubles that wealth could bring and the freedom found in poverty.

Jesus even tells His disciples in Matthew:

Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. -Matthew 19:24, NAB

This verse was just after Jesus had told a rich young man to sell everything he owns and give it to the poor (see Matthew 19:21).

Give money to help those in need.  Support your local food bank.  Give aide to the homeless shelter.  If you cannot offer much financially, offer your time instead.  Organizations like these are constantly looking for volunteers to help out.

God loves the poor as much as He loves you and I.  We must reflect this love on those in most need of help.  It is our duty as Christians to be a place for those less fortunate to seek that help.  Whether you can offer a significant amount of money or not, you can offer the love of Christ, which is more precious than the finest gold.
