Facing the "Frankenstorm"...

When the winds and waves of a great storm threaten your life, ask Jesus to help calm the storms:

One day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, "Let us cross to the other side of the lake." So they set sail, and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A squall blew over the lake, and they were taking in water and were in danger.

They came and woke him saying, "Master, master, we are perishing!"

He awakened, rebuked the wind and the waves, and they subsided and there was a calm. Then he asked them, "Where is your faith?"

But they were filled with awe and amazed and said to one another, "Who then is this, who commands even the winds and the sea, and they obey him?" -Luke 8:22-25, NAB

This week on the east coast of the United States, a storm is brewing that could endanger the lives of many.  A hurricane coming up the coast will meet a high pressure system that will act like a wall or obstacle in its path - not allowing the hurricane to subside.  At the same time, a cold front from the north will bring Arctic air and snow into the mix.

With the storms arrival near Halloween, it has been dubbed Frankenstorm.  Some estimates have predicted 12 inches of rain, 2 feet of snow, and 40-50 mph winds for a sustained period - all within a short span.  This freakish monster of a storm, like Frankenstein, is a stitched-together batch of storms that could do incredible damage.

Some of you may be facing the storm head on as it travels toward your home.  Others, like myself, have loved ones caught in the midst of the storm.  Whether you or someone you know is facing the storm, my prayers go out to everyone in its path.

I chose today's verse for one reason: that we all be reminded that our faith can save us in the midst of any storm.  Whether it is an actual storm bringing hurricanes, earthquakes, or other calamities, or it is simply the storms of our lives, the Lord can bring peace back to our hearts.

The disciples, while crossing the lake, were met by a terrible storm that threatened their small boat.  Afraid for their lives, the disciples woke Jesus up.  Jesus immediately saved them from the storm, but He was upset at their lack of faith.  When we face life's storms, do we let our fears consume us, or do we put our faith in Jesus?

Storms will bring damage (the Frankenstorm is estimated to bring over a billion dollars worth).  Our personal and emotional storms may bring damage that cannot even be given a dollar value.  But there is no amount of damage that can't be overcome with faith.  Repairing the damage may not be easy, but the Lord will be there to help us put our lives back together.

As the Frankenstorm comes crashing in this week, do what you must to protect your loved ones and yourself.  Have no fear, put your faith in Christ, and let the Good Lord protect you from the storms.
