The Promise Made to Abraham...

Through our faith, we help fulfill the promise made to Abraham:

Thus Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." Realize then that it is those who have faith who are children of Abraham. Scripture, which saw in advance that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, foretold the good news to Abraham, saying, "Through you shall all the nations be blessed." Consequently, those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham who had faith. -Galatians 3:6-9, NAB

A long time ago, centuries before Christ, God promised Abraham that all nations would be blessed through him. In Christ, that promise has been fulfilled. The Old Covenant has been fulfilled in the New.

What significance does this have for us today? Well, the promise made to Abraham did not end in the time of Christ or in the early Church. It continues to hold true today as Christianity continues to spread across the globe.

At one time, it was the Jewish nation that was primarily considered the children of Abraham, but now, as Christians, we also take part in that family. St. Paul tells us so.

The promise made to Abraham was (and is) a significant part of our history, but there are other promises that have made an impact on the world. None of these promises are greater, however, than the promise of salvation brought to us by Christ.

As we will soon learn in Ephesians (the next book we will study), we, the Gentiles, "are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:6, NAB)."

God made a promise to Abraham, and He fulfilled it. Now, He has made a promise to us through His Son, Jesus Christ, that we can share in the salvation found at the foot of the cross. Just as He fulfilled His promise to Abraham, He will surely fulfill this one too.

God promised blessings through Abraham and salvation through Christ. Will you, through faith, open your heart and share in those promises?
