Jesus Took the Curse...

The Law is a curse on the people, but Jesus took on that curse to save us from it:

For all who depend on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be everyone who does not persevere in doing all the things written in the book of the law." And that no one is justified before God by the law is clear, for "the one who is righteous by faith will live." But the law does not depend on faith; rather, "the one who does these things will live by them." Christ ransomed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, "Cursed be everyone who hangs on a tree," that the blessing of Abraham might be extended to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. -Galatians 3:10-14, NAB

When we try to live our lives according to the Law, we bring a curse upon ourselves.  How?  Because we will never live up to the Law, just as the Jews failed to do, time and time again.  If the Law was a curse on the Jews, why, then, would we want to bring that curse upon ourselves?

The Judaizers probably used Old Testament Scripture to defend their position.  St. Paul wisely uses Scripture to point out the error of their ways (this verse is full of Old Testament citations).  When our fellow Christians try to use the Law to convict us, we should do the same.

Recently, a fellow Christian pointed out how I was not living up to some Levitical laws of the Old Testament.  He had learned this from some Protestant preacher that used the Law to condemn the actions of other Christians.  In my defense, I pointed out that the Law would not lead us to salvation, just as St. Paul told the Galatians.

The Jews could not live up to the letter of the Law; neither can we.  It is a curse upon us, but Jesus took the curse upon Himself so that we might live.  He carried that curse up to the cross to save us once and for all.

Through faith in Jesus Christ, you can be saved from the curse of the Law.  He hung on a tree so that we would not have to.  If you want freedom from the curse of you failings, give your life over to Jesus, and He will free you from this curse forever.
