God's Promise to Abraham...

Over 400 years before the Mosaic Law came into existence, God made a promise to Abraham:

Brothers, in human terms I say that no one can annul or amend even a human will once ratified. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his descendant. It does not say, "And to descendants," as referring to many, but as referring to one, "And to your descendant," who is Christ. This is what I mean: the law, which came four hundred and thirty years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to cancel the promise. For if the inheritance comes from the law, it is no longer from a promise; but God bestowed it on Abraham through a promise. -Galatians 3:15-18, NAB

As we continue to discuss how the Law affects our lives, we must also remember that God's promise to Abraham came long before the Law existed.  Regardless of what may come from the Law, God would fulfill His promise.

Throughout the Old Testament, in the various covenants (or agreements) between God and the Jews, the Jews failed to live up to their end of the bargain.  Yet God would not fail to fulfill His end of the deal.  He promised Abraham that He would bless all nations through Isaac; that blessing came in the form of Jesus Christ.

Many of the Galatians felt, as many people do today, that the laws of the Old Testament came before Christ dwelled on earth; therefore, they take precedence over our faith in Him.  St. Paul's argument (which is an important one for us to understand) is that the promise of Christ came long before the Law, thus God's promise to Abraham (Christ) is not superceded by the Law.

Christ fulfilled God's promise to Abraham by blessing all nations with His saving grace.  We, too, can share in that blessing and the fulfillment of that promise.

We know that the promise of Christ existed long before the Laws of Moses.  We also know that Christ Himself existed in the beginning with God the Father.  The saving work of Christ, then, was a part of God's plan since the beginning of time - before the Law came to be.

God had a plan for mankind since creation, and that plan included us.  Accept the plan God has for your life.  Follow the will of the Father.  Let the saving grace of Christ, God's promise to Abraham, bring hope and peace to your life.  By doing so, you can share in the grace God had planned for us from the beginning.
