Our Father's Rules...

Like our earthly parents, God the Father set ground rules for our own protection:

Before faith came, we were held in custody under law, confined for the faith that was to be revealed. Consequently, the law was our disciplinarian for Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a disciplinarian. For through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus. -Galatians 3:23-26, NAB

As a child growing up, we are not mature enough to know right from wrong.  Until we are old enough to know the difference, our parents set rules for our own protection.  We may not understand them at the time, but they are for our own good.

Eventually, as we grow older, our parents have to let go and allow us to make our own mistakes.  They have to test us to see how we will do on our own without their supervision.  Most of us, as teenagers, fall flat on our face - making more mistakes than getting it right - but that's almost expected.

Mankind, as a whole, was not mature enough to exist without rules.  God the Father had to teach and mentor our society on the proper ways of living.  He set ground rules for us to follow until the time was right.  Finally, the time for Christ had come, and with it came a lot more freedom.  Like a teenager experiencing their first taste of freedom, mankind was free to make its own choices.

Well, we know how well that is going.  At first, mankind stumbled just to figure out what to do next.  Now, 2,000 years later, we continue to struggle in making the most basic choices of morality.

Each of us, as individuals, must make our own choices.  My parents raised my siblings and me very similarly, but we turned out very different.  This is due to the choices we each make.  Similarly, as children of God, we each take different paths in our spiritual adulthood.

We are free to live our lives as we choose, but we can still lean on the rules of God the Father for guidance.  We can follow the path of the faithful Church or society gone astray.  Morality is not dictated to us, but that does not mean we are free from it.  Instead, we must live a moral life on our own free will, and that can be even more difficult than following our Father's rules.

The choice is ours: live like an immature teenager, completely forgetting the morality taught to us by God the Father, or take the path to spiritual adulthood, living the life the Father always wanted for us.  Which path will you take?
