Bear the Burden...

Christ carried our burdens to the cross.  In return, He asks us to bear the burden of others:

Bear one another's burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. –Galatians 6:2, NAB

What is the law of Christ?  To love one another.  Therefore, we are not simply asked to help carry the burdens of others - we are required to!

All over the world, the poor, the sick, the hungry, and the oppressed desperately need our help.  They struggle through life in need of many things that we take for granted: food, clean water, shelter, clothing, and even freedom.

Do we take these burdens onto our own shoulders?  Or do we turn a blind eye to their suffering?  The Church, including each one of us as individual members, is called to help those in need and bear the burden of those less fortunate than ourselves.

Christ lived a life without sin.  He didn't owe anything to anybody, yet He carried our burdens to the cross anyway.  Not some of our burdens, but all of our burdens.  If we have a God that loves us that much, should we not return that love by helping others?  In Mark 25, Jesus tells us:

"Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me."  -Mark 25:40, NAB

When someone comes to collect for the poor, do you freely give?  When the opportunity to serve the homeless arises, do you sacrifice your time?  When friends, family, neighbors, and loved ones are going through difficult times, do you offer an open ear?

Of course, I know too well that we cannot possibly bear the burdens of everyone we meet - we are only human.  There are many opportunities that I would love to help with, but I lack the resources myself (time, money, talent) to be able to do so.  Despite our lack of resources, we must still give as much as we possibly can.

Christ loved you so much that He was willing to bear the burden of your sins on the cross.  How much are you willing to return that love by bearing the burdens of others for Him?
