Being Somebody...

Sometimes, our goal of being somebody can get in the way of who we were truly meant to be:

For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. –Galatians 6:3, NAB

Harsh words.  In previous verses, we have seen how St. Paul is not afraid to tell even the most painful of truths, and in today's verse, he does exactly that.

Do you want to be somebody?  Are you somebody already?  Really?  Who are you, or who do you want to be?  According to St. Paul, be careful because you may not be who you thought you were.  Even if you are, it may not really matter.

For some, becoming a spiritual somebody is their goal, and in many ways, this is a worthy goal.  We are often told that we should do our best to live like the saints we know and love.  But this can often be a slippery slope towards pride, and we may begin to think that we are somebody when we are really nobody.

I walk this tightrope daily.  My entire goal with this ministry is to make a difference, but the challenge is staying focused on making a difference for Christ - not myself.  We cannot get caught up in what we are doing; we must stay focused on who we are doing it for.

Whether you are a wanna-be Catholic author, or simply popular within the walls of your own parish for the work that you do, remember that we do it all for Jesus.  Doing good is rewarding and can make us feel good, but the real benefit comes later.  The rewards of Heaven are far greater than anything we will achieve today.

Personally, it took me a long time to realize that I am nobody, but one day, if I find my way to Heaven, that's the only somebody that I want to be.
