Cherish the Gift
We have all met someone successful. There are plenty of rags to riches stories that tell of people who came from nothing and became wealthy. Even if we are not millionaires, many of us have worked really hard to reach our station in life. People will tell you stories about all of their successes. They will have awards, trophies, and honors that they have earned along the way. But, we cannot take too much credit. Remember, it is God who brings these blessings on us.
"It is the Lord's blessing that brings wealth, and no effort can subsitute for it." - Proverbs 10:22 NAB
No one is telling you not to work hard; God will bless you for it. The idea to remember is that we cannot take credit for the blessings in our life. Too often, our ego gets away from us. We take pride in our accomplishments. We love to hear others compliment our successes. After all of that, we forget who really deserves the credit. When we are down, we are quick to blame God. We convince ourselves that life would not be such a mess if God had not caused it. We never want to take ownership of our failures in life, but we are quick to take ownership of our successes.
I'm guilty. I am not writing this as someone accusing someone else; I am writing this out of guilt. With all of the great things going on in my life, it is easy to get caught up in all of the glory. My life had been a struggle for a number of years. Through it all, I turned to God for help. He carried me through some of the toughest times in my life. Now, everything is moving full-steam ahead. With life moving forward at an incredible pace, it is easy to lose sight of what's important.
Even this site causes me to stumble. I am so thankful that you are reading these words right now. God has blessed me with the words to inspire others. I cannot take credit for that. Spend ten minutes talking to me in person. You would be surprised to find out that an average guy like me writes this well at all. I don't. It is all Him. When I write, it just pours out of me. He inspires me. He tells me exactly what to say.
That was more personal than I may have liked it to be, and I may come to regret it. But, I thought that sharing a very personal story of my own would inspire you as well. When life is down, trust that He will bring you back up again. When He does, do not forget to give the honor and glory to He who deserves it. In the end, all we can say is "Thank you, God!"
