Above All Powers...

As the first chapter of Ephesians comes near to its end, St. Paul, again, refers to God's power and might:

...which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come. –Ephesians 1:20-21, NAB

For anyone who doubts Christ's true authority in this world, Scripture clearly tells us that His seat next to the Father in Heaven places Him above all powers, every man and woman that has ever lived (or will live).

Was Jesus just a prophet with a message of peace?  Was He the Messiah that came to save the Jews from oppression?  Was He, and is He, truly divine?

There are many theories about the true identity of Christ.  Few will deny that He lived (there are historical records for that), but they have a difficult time accepting that He was and is the Son of God.  They don't accept that He is sitting at the right hand of the Father.

But as many theological scholars have put it, including Dr. Scott Hahn, Jesus is either who He said He was (the Son of God), or He is one of the greatest liars and charlatans of all time.  Could 2 billion Christians, including 1.2 billion Catholics, be wrong?

Each of the world's great empires in the world have come and gone - except one: the Catholic Church (and Christianity as a whole).  The Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, Mayans, and many other empires have fallen apart, but the Church has remained for over 2,000 years.  Why?  Because Christ's authority, power, and dominion over the Church has enabled it to last.

There is little doubt, then, that Christ's divinity places Him above all powers in this world.  May we continue to bow in honor of His majesty, giving all glory to the one true King.
