Dead in Sin...

If we follow the ways of the world, it will surely lead us to sin and death:

You were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you once lived following the age of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest. -Ephesians 2:1-3, NAB

By following the ways of the ruler of the air, the Devil, we are choosing a path apart from the Lord.  Without Christ in our life, we will face the just punishment for our sins:death.

Why is the Devil known as the "ruler of the power of the air"?  Because he works in that space between us on Earth and God in Heaven.  He tries to stop us from developing a relationship with our Savior.

The Devil accomplishes his work by tempting us to sin.  He masterfully does this through worldly desires, which seem harmless on the outside, but can be devastating on the inside.  Once we are dead in sin, he has us right where he wants us - separated from our Creator.

Doesn't this sound familiar?  St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians from so long ago sounds like a letter that could be written by one of our bishops today.  The Devil, and his evil ways, have been around for a long time, and I doubt he is going anywhere anytime soon.

To overcome the ruler of the air, we must give up our sinful ways to be reunited with our God in Heaven, realizing that the pleasures of this world can never quench our thirst.  Only the Living Water, Jesus Christ Himself, can satisfy us.  If you find yourself dead in sin, there is still hope - you can find new life through the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ.
