The House of God...

The nails of the cross hold together the framework of the House of God:

Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. -Ephesians 2:21-22, NAB

When we think about the house of God, we have to go beyond our local parishes and cathedrals.  The house of God is the Church, the communion of saints, and each one of us is a part of its structure.

The framework of a house or building is comprised of lumber, cement, steel, and other materials.  On top of the framework, there are finishing materials, such as drywall, roof shingles, fixtures, flooring, and more.  Just as each one of those materials is an important part of the house's structure, we, too, are an important part of the structure of the Church.

In a home, lumber provides the basic structure.  Cement provides the foundation.  Flooring, drywall, and paint provide the finishing touches.  Similarly, each one of us is called to a special purpose in the house of God.  From teachers to evangelists to laborers, the house of God would not be complete without each one of us.

The entire structure of the Church, the house of God, comes together through the Holy Spirit that lives in each one of us.  Through Him, we are joined together by the nails of the cross and Christ's sacrifice.

We are the house of God.  May the Holy Spirit within us bring us ever closer together, and may we become essential parts of the structure of the Church.  We are each called to a particular purpose with the Church, but only we can choose to live up to it.

NOTE: On Saturdays, I will now be posting reflections for the Saturday evening and Sunday morning Mass readings.  Sundays will continue to be special topics based on relevant current events, and weekdays will continue to focus on a given book of the Bible (which is currently Ephesians).
