The Unlikely Hero...

St. Paul remains humble in his service to the Church:

Of this I became a minister by the gift of God's grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his power. To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ, and to bring to light [for all] what is the plan of the mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things, so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the principalities and authorities in the heavens. -Ephesians 3:7-10, NAB

As a persecutor of Christians, St. Paul was an unlikely hero in the New Testament.  His plan was to stop the spread of Christianity; however, God's plan was much different.  Christ chose St. Paul to go out and spread the Gospel to the world instead.

St. Paul recognized his own failings, recognized that he was a sinner, but never allowed that to stop him from his mission.  His life was heading down a path that he had never expected, but he would net let that slow him down.  He opened his heart to Christ and let the Lord work through him.

Looking at the lives of many saints, their stories may be similar - unlikely heroes emerging from humble beginnings.  Yet they all have one thing in common: a love for Christ and His Church.  This love fueled their missions and led them to their saintly lives.  Like St. Paul, they allowed Jesus to shine through their deeds.

We, too, can become unlikely heroes.  We may see ourselves as just ordinary Catholics, but God wants to use us for so much more.  We simply need to open our lives and allow Him to work through us.  I had never imagined myself becoming Catholic in the first place, and now, I spend a great deal of time spreading the faith.  It's amazing what God can do in your life if you simply allow Him to.

St. Paul served as an example for us to follow, showing us that God can use anyone to spread the Good News of the Gospel.  Let go of who you are and become who God wants you to be, an unlikely hero and a saint in the making.

NOTE: On Saturdays, I will now be posting reflections for the Saturday evening and Sunday morning Mass readings.  Sundays will continue to be special topics based on relevant current events, and weekdays will continue to focus on a given book of the Bible (which is currently Ephesians).
