Matthew 16:18-19...

With the news of the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI, I want to take time with this special Daily Bible Verse:

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." -Matthew 16:18-19, NAB

There is no doubt that Blessed Pope John Paul II holds a special place in the heart of many Catholics, but for me, someone who converted to the Catholic faith only a few short years ago, Pope Benedict XVI has been the only Pope I have known.  I will miss him greatly.

Coming into the Church, the papacy was something that I did not fully understand, but the more I learned, the more I loved about him.  And not just the papacy in general, but Pope Benedict XVI himself.  He has been an excellent example for us to follow.

I want to pray for our Holy Father as he makes this bold choice - always putting the needs of the Church before his own.  He is one of only a few popes to step down from the office, and it must have been a difficult choice to make.

At the same time, this is an exciting time for the Church.  For me personally, I remember the process of Pope Benedict XVI being chosen, but it meant little to me at the time.  Now, I wait in joyful expectation of what the Holy Spirit will bring to the Church as He guides us to find a new leader.

May the Lord bring our beloved Pontiff good health in his retirement, and may he enjoy the rest of his days peacefully.  We love you, Papa.  Thank you for the years you have given us.  And may the Lord bless us with an equally great leader to fill the Chair of St. Peter.  Someone who will continue to lead us into the 21st century and will have some difficult shoes to fill.
