Do Not Go to Bed Angry...

Anger is natural, but we must not allow it to lead us to sin:

Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not leave room for the devil. -Ephesians 4:26-27, NAB

No doubt, you have heard the phrase, "Do not go to bed angry," but did you know that it was a Biblical principle?  As St. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4, it is okay to be angry, but we should try to make peace before the day is over.

As we went through the pre-cana process to get married in the Catholic Church, my wife and I heard this often.  Our parish priest, our mentoring couple, and many of our family and friends had this advice for us.  Was it really that important?

Anger happens.  Even during our time of dating, this was something we experienced.  Couples fight and eventually make up.  What's the big deal?  Well, dragging out an argument longer than it needs can leave lasting damage in your relationship, and in your soul.

If we allow anger to consume us, it will eventually lead us to poor choices and sin.  Anger is a raw, negative emotion that has the power to corrupt us if left unchecked.  For that reason, we must always keep our anger under control.  Yes, it is okay to be upset; however, we cannot let it open us up to the temptations of the devil.

Eventually, the anger in our hearts will lead us to sin, which will only cause greater division in a relationship.  We become more angry and commit greater sins against each other.  Anger has an eroding effect on our relationships.  It will slowly destroy a relationship, one fight at a time.

The best way to overcome our anger is through love.  Through love, we can forgive each other - regardless of the wrong.  We can stop the erosion and rebuild our relationships.  Before you go to bed each night, allow love to calm your heart, forgive those who hurt you, and go to bed in peace.
