Spiritual Blackout...

When the world seems dark and you are facing a spiritual blackout, turn to the light of Christ:

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light." -Ephesians 5:8-14, NAB

A couple of years ago, many of the cities and towns in my area suffered a power outage that lasted for days, and after only a few hours of stumbling in the dark with only a flashlight and a few candles, I quickly realized how much I missed the light.

Each day, as the sun would rise, light came back into the world, even if only for a short time.  Looking back, this reminds me of our life, where the natural light of the world comes and goes, rises and sets.  If we try to live by the ever-changing sun, our life would be filled with times of both light and darkness.

During the light of day, the world seemed more vibrant and alive; at night, it came to a stand still.  There were two options: wander around in the dark, afraid to stumble or run into a wall, or let life come to a halt, deciding to barely move in fear of what may come.

Is your life facing a spiritual blackout?  Are you wandering around the world in utter darkness?  Are you afraid to take another step - worried that you may stumble and fall?

When the power was restored, the world lit up once again, just as Christ can light up the darkness in our lives.  Regardless of the rising and setting of the sun, we have the Son of God to light our paths.  We can live without the fear of darkness.  As Jesus tells us:

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  -John 8:12, NAB
