Isaiah 43:18-19...

During the season of Lent, it is important to let go of the past:

Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? In the desert I make a way, in the wasteland, rivers. -Isaiah 43:18-19, NAB

Lent is a time to refresh ourselves through penance and a renewed purpose to our faith.  In essence, it is a spiritual spring cleaning: a time to clear out the junk that clutters our hearts and souls.

My wife and I have begun our spring cleaning early.  Spring is still weeks away, but we are starting a number of projects to help get rid of the clutter from our house.  We've been donating useful items to charity, where they can find a better home, and getting rid of the trash that really serves no purpose anymore.

Lent is very similar.  We have to take inventory of our lives, both spiritually and emotionally, and clear out some of the clutter.  We can tidy up our faith by getting rid of the extra mess that does not serve a purpose anymore.

The hardest part of a spiritual spring cleaning, of course, is letting go of the past.  We hold tightly to our memories, both good and bad, but they may be holding us back from moving forward.  We cannot let our past get in the way of moving forward in the future.

The process has been challenging.  As we further sort between the keep, donate, and trash piles, the decisions become more and more difficult.  But now, with all of the mess out of our way, we have more time to embrace what really matters.

Does your spiritual life feel a bit cluttered?  It may be time to take this Lenten opportunity to do a little spiritual spring cleaning.  Letting go of the past will help you see a much brighter future.
