Honor Your Father and Mother...

St. Paul continues describing our family roles with a call to obey our parents:

Children, obey your parents (in the Lord), for this is right. "Honor your father and mother." This is the first commandment with a promise, "that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth." -Ephesians 6:1-3, NAB

In Exodus 20, we are given the Ten Commandments, which include, "Honor your father and mother," and it comes with a promise: obey your parents and you will be blessed for it.

We, of course, teach this to our kids - and remind them of it when they misbehave.  A strong family begins with a loving husband and wife (as we learned yesterday in Ephesians 5) and is made fruitful through disciplined children.  However, as we grow into adults, do we continue to obey this commandment?

As children, we are taught discipline by our parents.  We learn how to obey the directions of others, such as in this workplace, and to do what's right, both morally and ethically.  It makes sense, then, that discipline is an essential ingredient in a thriving adulthood.

Disciplined children become disciplined adults.  When we are afraid to discipline our children (even in the face of social pressure), we are doing a disservice to them.  They will be less equipped for adulthood and will not be as blessed because of it.

We can already see the effects of poorly disciplined children.  Kids are growing up with a sense of entitlement, and when they enter the workforce, they lack the discipline to succeed.  The lack of discipline in Western culture will only lead to a lazy, entitled workforce, and society will suffer for it.

Society's children need discipline.  If we want to restore the strength of society, it will begin by laying down a strong moral code based on the Ten Commandments.  For our children to succeed as adults, we need to teach them to "honor your father and mother" as kids.  Their future depends on it.
