John 14:16-17...

With the papal conclave to elect a new pope about to begin, let's put our faith and trust in the Holy Spirit:

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you." -John 14:16-17, NAB

With Pope Benedict XVI retiring, it is time to elect a new pope.  The cardinals have assembled in Rome to begin the papal conclave this Tuesday, March 12th.  Their decision will have a major impact on the direction of the Church in the coming years.

Why did I choose this verse for this occasion?  Because at times like these, we need to trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church.  We have to put our faith in the Spirit's ability to guide the cardinals in this process.

When you read the mainstream media's interpretation of the process, most of their commentary focuses on the political aspects of the papacy.  They think in worldly terms, but this process is far more spiritual than political.  The heart and soul of the cardinals will take a larger role than their minds.

Many media outlets have tried to predict who will become pope.  They base their ideas on their own logic through a variety of factors.  While it may make sense from a human perspective, this has no impact on the Spirit.  The Spirit's logic is far greater than any of us could ever understand.

By the end of this week, we will probably have a new pope (the last few have only taken a couple of days).  He may be one of the "frontrunners" for the position, or he could be someone no one expected.  Only time will tell.  What we do know, though, is that he will be exactly who God wanted it to be, and that's all that matters.

May the Holy Spirit be with the cardinals at the papal conclave, and may God be with the man elected as our 267th pope.  I look forward to seeing the white smoke and hearing the words, "Habemus Papum!"
