The Shield of Faith...

As we continue discussing the armor of God, we are told to pick up the shield of faith to protect ourselves from total destruction:

In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one. -Ephesians 6:16, NAB

A traditional arrow aims to kill one man; a flaming arrow hopes to burn down an entire city - bringing total destruction to everything around it.  Realize, then, that when the devil targets you with one of his flaming arrows, he wants the fire to spread to those around you, as well.

Imagine the gruesome scene of being hit by a flaming arrow.  It will either kill or seriously injure you, and while you are running around in search of help, the fire that is killing you will begin to engulf everything around you, too.

Sin and hatred spread like that fire.  Once a single person has been hit, that fire will spread to everyone around them, and soon, everything and everyone they care about will be burned by the flames.  One single arrow has the power to bring down entire communities.

The shield of faith has the ability to protect us from these attacks.  Not only does it protect our own lives from death, but it can help to stop the spread of hatred and evil in the world around us.  With faith as our shield, we can protect our communities from the flames.

Sin and hatred are spreading in the world like a wildfire, and to combat these flames, we need to help others take up the shield of faith.  In this way, evangelization not only helps to share the beautiful love of Christ, but also stop the engulfing flames of evil.  Will you help others take up their shield?
