Even Saints Need Prayer...

St. Paul realized His need for God's intercession on his life:

[Pray] also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must. -Ephesians 6:19-20, NAB

We often think of St. Paul as one of the greatest saints who helped form the Church through his leadership and writing, but even saints need prayer, and St. Paul, in today's verse, asks the people of Ephesus for exactly that.

St. Paul is known as one of the Church's greatest evangelists of all time, yet he prayed for guidance in what to say.  We see him as a hero for facing persecution, but he asks for help while he is in prison.  We know him as a bold witness for Christ, still he prayed for the courage just to open his mouth.

If a saint as great as St. Paul turned to God in prayer, why don't we?  Why do we try to take on life's greatest challenges without ever turning to God for help?

Look at the lives of many saints, and we see there is a common ingredient: prayer.  They did not become known as great saints by the works of their own hands; they became saints because they turned their lives over to Christ - depending on His help and intercession every step of the way.

Do you want to become a future saint?  Then pray.  Whether we are trying to move mountains with our faith, or just kick pebbles out of our path, God is there to help us. Whatever the task, big or small, we can turn to our Lord in prayer and ask for help.
