More Than a Prophet...

Today, we begin studying the book of Hebrews:

In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. -Hebrews 1:1-4, NAB

In the pages of the Old Testament, we can read about a line of prophets that guided Israel throughout the centuries.  Their job was to relay the message of God to the people.  Many of these prophets spoke of One who would come to finally bring God's people eternal victory.  They were, of course, speaking about Jesus Christ.

When God sent His Son to bring us a message, He came as more than a prophet.  Jesus came as a prophet, a king, a savior, and so much more.  He completed the work foretold by the prophets and brought salvation to mankind.

The author of Hebrews points out that Jesus did not come into being solely for this purpose.  He was, in fact, there in the beginning when God created the heavens and earth.  Actually, he states that the universe was created through Christ, the Word of God - just as we learn in John 1:1-5.

Like a prophet, Jesus shared many teachings with the people of Israel, but as more than a prophet, He sacrificed His life for our sins and took His spot at the Father's right hand.  When His life was finished, He took His rightful place in Heaven to be worshiped and glorified.

Some only see Jesus as a teacher and prophet that shared moral teachings with the people, but He is much more than a prophet.  He is our Lord and Savior, one of the Three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity, who came to free us from the slavery of our sins.  May the Holy Spirit show you the truth of that message.

I hope you enjoy our upcoming study of Hebrews.  I have learned a great deal from our studies of Ephesians, Galatians, Romans, and the Gospel of St. Mark, and my hope is that this study will be just as fruitful.
