Jesus, Our Brother...

The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is both our Savior and our Brother:

He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them "brothers," saying: "I will proclaim your name to my brothers, in the midst of the assembly I will praise you"; and again: "I will put my trust in him"; and again: "Behold, I and the children God has given me."  -Hebrews 2:11-13, NAB

If two people have the same father, they are siblings: brothers and sisters; therefore, because we have the same Father as Christ, He is our Brother - a relationship that He is unafraid to share.

Too often, we see Jesus as a figure that lived many centuries ago, and His world is very distant from our own.  But today's verse should bridge that gap.  It should remind us that we can have a very real relationship with Jesus as our Brother today.

When we need advice, or a helping hand, we often turn to our parents, just as we turn to God the Father.  But there are times when we would rather turn to someone with similar experiences, a peer, and that is when we can turn to our Brother Jesus for help.

Because He came to earth and lived among us, Jesus understands how we feel in a special way.  He knows what it's like to face the temptations of the world, so who better to give us guidance and brotherly advice in our times of greatest need?

Having the same Father, Jesus is our Brother.  We can confide in Him and get relevant help and advice as our Big Brother, and always trust in Him because He is our God.  Can there be a better combination than that?
