Harden Not Your Hearts...

We are warned against allowing our faith to fade:

Therefore, as the holy Spirit says: "Oh, that today you would hear his voice, 'Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion in the day of testing in the desert, where your ancestors tested and tried me and saw my works for forty years. Because of this I was provoked with that generation and I said, "They have always been of erring heart, and they do not know my ways." As I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my rest."'"  -Hebrews 3:7-11, NAB

Are you on fire for Jesus?  Do you feel moments of spiritual highs?  Well, be careful, because spiritual lows often follow spiritual highs, and they can be difficult to overcome.

I do not want to discourage anyone.  Actually, my life is going very well right now, and I feel very blessed.  But at the same time, I know that troubled times may come, and that is when our faith is really put to the test.  The key is simply to be prepared for it.

The author points out the Israelites loss of faith in the desert.  They felt a spiritual high as they were delivered from Egypt, but began to lose faith, which led them to 40 years of wandering.  During that time of wandering, they fell further and further away from God, and it was difficult for them to overcome.

We often find faith in the dark times of our lives, but this eventually leads to a new life.  As our life improves, we become complacent.  We begin to take our blessings for granted, we participate less in the Church, and we do not have the same zeal for our faith.  Usually, this is when disaster strikes, and it shakes our faith to the core.

The key is building a strong foundation for our faith.  Spiritual highs are great, but we need to build a faith that can handle both the highs and lows.  Christ will bring us many blessings, but He can also carry us through the difficult times - which is probably the greatest blessing He offers us.

Faith should be the center of our lives, in good times and in bad.  Do not let your faith fade in good times, or lose hope in the bad.  Harden not your hearts; Jesus will always be with you.
