Lifelong Journey...

Following Christ is not a one-time decision; it is a lifelong journey:

We have become partners of Christ if only we hold the beginning of the reality firm until the end, for it is said: "Oh, that today you would hear his voice: 'Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion.'"  -Hebrews 3:14-15, NAB

Becoming Christian is not a single event in our lives.  It begins with a choice, but requires us to continually make that choice every day thereafter.  Usually, it is our actions - not our words - that are evidence of that choice.

During my many years as a Protestant, I believed in the "once saved, always saved" philosophy, as many Protestants do.  Being born again was a single, life-changing moment in my life, and once I chose Christ that one time, I was set for the rest of my life.

Today's verse counters that a bit.  It may not be the full proof needed to win this debate, but it is definitely proof that our faith relies on more than a single decision.

I can tell you from personal experience that we can easily drift off the right path.  At one point in my life, I did exactly that.  I took my salvation for granted, and I became too relaxed in my faith.  Over time, my weakened faith almost became just a memory, but luckily, God pulled me back in before it was too late.

Have you ever wondered why this site is called Waking Up Catholic?  Because we cannot simply be born again one time, we have to wake up each day with a renewed sense of our faith.  And for me, although I never imagined my life going in this direction, this means waking up Catholic, each and every day.

Faith is a lifelong journey that begins the day we accept Christ in our lives and continues until the very end.  I once thought that being "born again" a single time was enough, but now, I realize that waking up Catholic is a choice that I must make today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life.
