Philippians 2:3-4...

How well do you put the needs of others before your own?

...Humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but (also) everyone for those of others.  -Philippians 2:3-4, NAB

Putting others first can be a challenging task.  We naturally want to serve our own selfish interests, so putting them aside to help others can be difficult.  To follow in the footsteps of Christ, however, we must lay down our own interests for the sake of others.

Ordinarily, I am a pretty calm, slow-to-anger guy.  One thing that gets me irritable, though, is working around the house.  I am not naturally good with a hammer or screwdriver in my hand - that's why I became an IT guy - so I quickly lose my patience when I struggle with basic house renovations.

With a new baby on the way, my wife and I are preparing our little nest.  Each weekend is filled with projects that stretch my abilities (and my patience).  While I would rather be doing just about anything else, I put the needs of my wife and baby-to-be before my own.

Of course, this is not the only sacrifice that I make.  There are a number of other ways.  At the same time, I am not alone in this.  My wife constantly puts my needs before her own.  For instance, I set records for my level of "picky-ness", but my wife faces that challenge gracefully as we plan dinner each night (thanks, sweetie).

Our sacrifices should not be limited to just the people within our home.  We should make sacrifices on behalf of our family and friends, our fellow Christians, and even complete strangers.  By putting others first, we are reflecting Christ's love on them.

Putting others first does not come naturally, but if we want to show the world Christ's love, we must set aside our selfish desires to put their needs before our own.
