Entering God's Rest...

When our lives end, and we go to rest, what do we mean by rest?

Therefore, let us be on our guard while the promise of entering into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. For in fact we have received the good news just as they did. But the word that they heard did not profit them, for they were not united in faith with those who listened... For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this manner, "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works"; and again, in the previously mentioned place, "They shall not enter into my rest."  -Hebrews 4:1-5, NAB

The author of Hebrews continues in chapter 4 by explaining God's words when He said, "They shall not enter my rest."  Today's verse points us towards the same rest that God took on the seventh day, after the creation of the world.

When God created the world, He saw that it was good, so He rested on the seventh day and made it holy.  God is inviting us into this rest.  We can join Him in heaven and enjoy the beauties of creation.  We can rest with Him on the seventh day.

We try to find comfort in the middle of life's storms.  We curl up with a good book and take time off to spend with our family.  We spend the day getting pampered at the spa or enjoy a bright morning out on the golf course.  We even travel to far away places just to get away from it all.

Our efforts to find rest do not have a lasting effect.  When our book is done, our round of golf complete, and our plane touches back down, life quickly reminds us of our troubles.  We will never find true rest in this world.  To find true peace and rest, there is only one place to look: our eternal rest with God.

When you become tired and weary, stop trying to find comfort in this world and put your hope in Christ, who will lead you to eternal rest with the Father.
