Romans 15:13...

During our most difficult times, we must rely on hope to see us through:

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the holy Spirit.  -Romans 15:13, RSV

As many of you know, this week has been a time of mourning for my family, and as we cope with the loss, the natural reaction of many has been asking "why?"  Why do we suffer?  Why do we go through these struggles?  Why did God not spare us from this pain?

Some have turned away from God in anger - upset that He allows tragedies like this to happen.  Others have clung to their faith, knowing that God will be there for them when they need Him the most.

So why does God allow us to face great hardships in the first place?  Well, we could spend hours debating about God's will and man's free will (one of God's greatest gifts to us), but in the end, asking why will never bring us peace.  Even if we find the answer, the pain will not go away.

Our only solution, then, is to cling to hope.  Hope will bring us comfort.  Hope will ease our pain.  Hope will give us a reason and purpose for carrying on in troubled times.  In the midst of darkness, hope is the light that allows us to see clearly again.

Pain is inevitable.  The loss of a loved one, a career that is struggling, the battle with cancer and illness, or a broken relationship can lead us to asking why, but we cannot change the past.  We cannot change what has brought us to this moment.  All we can do is decide where we will go next.  As difficult as this moment may be, it is not the end of our journey.

Hope will be your light in the darkness.  Hope will help you navigate the storms.  Hope will eventually lead you to brighter days.  May your hope in Christ help you to stop looking back at the adversity in your life, and start looking forward to the joys ahead.

Thank you, again, for all of the prayers, love, and support for my family.  These coming days, weeks, and months will not be easy, but in Christ, we find our hope for better days.
