Christ's Obedience...

The author of Hebrews comments on Christ's obedience to His Father:

Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, declared by God high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.  -Hebrews 5:8-10, NAB

Christ came so that He might have the full human experience.  Part of that experience is learning to be obedient.  As one Person of the Holy Trinity, Christ could have saved Himself from the cross, but He chose to be obedient to the Father's will - an important part of our salvation.

Throughout His life, Jesus had the full experience of being human.  From joy to sorrow, freedom to temptation, Christ felt the full range of human emotions.  His obedience, then, was crucial.  He had to learn how to follow the will of the Father - regardless of the cost.

Jesus was tempted by pain and hunger for forty days in the desert.  He was tempted again with grief and sorrow in the Garden of Gethsemane.  And He was tempted on the cross, as He was mocked and tortured, to save Himself from that horrible death.  Still, He remained obedient to His Father.

We are taught to trust and follow God's will, which can be one of the most difficult aspects of our faith.  There are times when following His will can be extremely challenging.  By following God's will to the cross, Jesus gave us an example to follow.  We may not understand God's will, but we have to trust that it leads to a greater purpose.

Christ brought grace, mercy, and salvation to the world through His obedience to the Father's will.  For us to feel the depth of God's love, then, we must be obedient to the laws and commands of the Father, as well.  Obedience may seem like a burden, but in reality, it is the path to pure joy and happiness.
