Spiritual Immaturity...

In today's verse, the author scolds the reader for not maturing in faith and letting their knowledge slip away:

About this we have much to say, and it is difficult to explain, for you have become sluggish in hearing. Although you should be teachers by this time, you need to have someone teach you again the basic elements of the utterances of God. You need milk, (and) not solid food. Everyone who lives on milk lacks experience of the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those whose faculties are trained by practice to discern good and evil.  -Hebrews 5:11-14, NAB

Spiritual immaturity, as described in today's verse, is plaguing the Church today.  Many Catholics have forgotten what they learned in the faith formation process and know very little about their faith.  How much do you remember from your spiritual formation?

Basically, the author is saying that, as adults, we should be teaching others about the faith (as catechists), but instead, we need to be re-taught the very basics first.  We cannot teach anyone about the faith if we do not understand it ourselves.

The author of Hebrews is rather harsh with the reader - scolding them for allowing their faith to slide.  I, on the other hand, understand where you are coming from, and my entire goal with this website is to correct that problem.  I did not convert until I was an adult, so I can understand learning about the faith later in life.

In a couple short months, I will be publishing a book with this very goal in mind (it's fully written and going through the editing process now).  It will cover many of the same topics of this site, but on a slightly deeper level.  The goal is to help Catholic converts explore the faith for the first time, while helping cradle Catholics return to the faith.  I'll keep you posted with details.

The Church recognizes this problem, as well.  Actually, a primary focus of the New Evangelization is helping to "revert" Catholics that have fallen away from the faith.  The goal is to combat spiritual immaturity with basic catechesis and adult faith formation.  Hopefully, this will get the Church back on the right track again (especially in the West).

We may have forgotten much of what we learned in our childhood faith formation, but it's never too late to change that.  Grab a Bible, attend a class, or pick up a good book on the Catholic faith.  It's time to get our faith back on the right track again.
