Deeper Knowledge of the Christian Faith...

Eventually, we need to go beyond the basics and gain a deeper knowledge of the Christian faith:

Therefore, let us leave behind the basic teaching about Christ and advance to maturity, without laying the foundation all over again: repentance from dead works and faith in God, instruction about baptisms and laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.  -Hebrews 6:1-2, NAB

There are two main reasons why I left the nondenominational Christian faith:

  1. I struggled to connect personally among the thousands of churchgoers each week.
  2. I was thirsty for a greater depth to my faith.

It was that second reason that we are talking about today.  Most nondenominational and evangelical churches are great at drawing in large crowds with emotional, soul-stirring messages, but they lack one thing: depth.  On the surface, these churches are great; however, most fail at providing any real depth to their teaching.

So they have a great formula for bringing people back to the faith (or to the faith for the first time), yet struggle to develop that faith to maturity - just as we see in today's verse.  It is important to lay a strong foundation of beliefs as a Christian.  At some point, though, we need to go beyond that.

Nondenominational and evangelical churches are not alone.  Catholic parishes have to avoid this, as well, by offering strong adult faith formation programs.  And we, as individual Catholics, need to avoid this in our own lives.  Once we have a solid understanding of our faith, we need to move beyond the basics.

The depth of Catholic theology was one of the primary forces behind my conversion.  The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn.  Now, I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.  It has strengthened my faith and helps me to weather any storm.  A mature faith is the only faith that lasts.

Catholicism offers a deeper knowledge of the Christian faith than you will find in other denominations.  We may convert (or revert) to the Catholic faith for many reasons, but only by allowing our faith to mature can we build a faith that lasts.
