Blessed by a Greater Priest...

We are beginning to see the emergence of a new priesthood:

Unquestionably, a lesser person is blessed by a greater. In the one case, mortal men receive tithes; in the other, a man of whom it is testified that he lives on. One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, was tithed through Abraham, for he was still in his father's loins when Melchizedek met him.  -Hebrews 7:7-10, NAB

In the Old Testament, the Levitical priests managed the covenant between God and His people, but even they were blessed by a greater priest than themselves.

The language of today's verse is confusing, but let's boil it down.  We learned yesterday that Abraham offer tithes to Melchizedek, the High Priest, and Melchizedek blessed him in return.  At that time, Levi, whose sons would become the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament, had not been born yet.  Therefore, the Jewish priesthood received its blessing from Melchizedek through Abraham.

We are beginning to see two priesthoods.  One which is mortal, the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament, and one immortal, the order of Melchizedek.  The greater priesthood (Melchizedek) gave blessings to the lesser, as we read in the first line.

Two days ago, we learned how Christ fulfilled the role of High Priest after Melchizedek.  Combining those two ideas, Christ continues the priesthood that first offered blessings on the Jewish priesthood.  Christ, then, is a greater priest than the Levites.  He has become the High Priest for us all.

What can we take from all of this?  Christ is greater than any man, priest or otherwise, and He now manages our covenant with God, just as the Levites once did.  Christ will bless our lives when we offer tithes to Him.  He is our Mediator, our High Priest, our Savior.

Offer yourself to Christ, our High Priest, and He will bless you in return.  He is the High Priest of a New Covenant, and through Him, we can find the path to salvation.
