Jesus: Guarantee of a Better Covenant...

Yesterday's verse taught us that Christ brought a New Covenant, but was it any better?

On the one hand, a former commandment is annulled because of its weakness and uselessness, for the law brought nothing to perfection; on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. And to the degree that this happened not without the taking of an oath - for others became priests without an oath, but he with an oath, through the one who said to him: "The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent: 'You are a priest forever'" - to that same degree has Jesus (also) become the guarantee of an (even) better covenant.  -Hebrews 7:18-22, NAB

The author of Hebrews tells us, without a doubt, that Jesus is the guarantee of a better covenant.  He came to complete what the Levitical priests couldn't.

In the Old Testament, there were a series of covenants with the Jewish people.  It included the oaths God made to Adam, Abraham, and Moses, among others, but it never included the Levitical priesthood.  There was never an oath between them and God.

The problem was the mortality of the priests.  The priests did not live forever, so the Law they mediated was constantly renewed with each new high priest.  The covenants from the Old Testament depended on the Law; therefore, the constant change of high priests made an impact on the people's ability to live up to them.

With Christ, God made an oath with the priesthood from the order of Melchizedek.  This adds a guarantee to the New Covenant.  The Covenant is eternal because Christ, the High Priest, is eternal.  The covenant no longer depends on mortal priests; instead, its foundation rests on Christ, the eternal Son of God.

As our ever-living intercessor, Christ is the guarantee of a better covenant.  Through Him, God made an oath to us, which ensures that the New Covenant will last forever.  Last time I checked, forever is quite a long time.
