John 16:13-15...

On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, in a reading from the Gospel of St. John, we learn more about the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:

But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.  -John 16:13-15, NAB

This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.  This special day probably does not rank high on most Catholics' lists - but it should.  What could be more important than celebrating God Himself?

The idea of the Trinity can be tough to grasp, yet it is one of the most marvelous aspects of our God.  How one God can be three Persons is beyond our comprehension.  Still, it only makes us love Him that much more.

When choosing today's verse, it seems that the Church chose this Gospel reading to clearly reflect the Biblical roots of the Trinity.  For any Christian who may doubt the existence of the Trinity, they can find the truth coming directly from the mouth of Christ.

Meanwhile, this verse also beautifully tells us the special mission of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit's job is to guide us to the truth.  And He will not stop there.  Once He has guided us to the truth, He will help us to interpret it, as well.  What good is knowing the truth if we do not understand or comprehend what it means?

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Trinity is the "central mystery of Christian faith and life."  May the Holy Spirit continue guiding you to the truth and helping you to interpret its mystery.
