2 Timothy 2:3...

As we celebrate Memorial Day in the United States, let's remember those who gave their life for our freedom:

Bear your share of hardship along with me like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  -2 Timothy 2:3, NAB

Memorial Day in the United States, for many people, signifies the beginning of summer.  It is a long weekend for many, and we begin our summer routines.  Warm weather is back, beaches are open, and the cold of winter is finally gone.  Beyond these celebrations, though, we need to remember the purpose of the holiday: remembering our fallen soldiers.

The true purpose of Memorial Day is to remember the lives of the brave men and women who died for our freedom.  Without their sacrifices, our country (the United States) would not enjoy democracy - something we often take for granted.

On this day, as we remember the American heroes who gave their lives for our sake, let's also remember the many great saints and martyrs who did the same for our Catholic faith.  Many of them, as good soldiers of Christ Jesus, gave their lives for our freedom.  They may be gone, but their actions will not be forgotten.

From St. Stephen, the first martyr, to those being persecuted around the world today, the Church continues on because of their bravery.  The message of Christ lives on because they were not afraid to die in His name.

This Memorial Day, take a moment to pause during your cookouts and summer activities to remember the American heroes who died for our democracy and the Christian saints who died for our Lord.  Without them, freedom might not exist.
