Titus 3:9-11...

When we get into a religious debate, we must remember these words:

Avoid foolish arguments, genealogies, rivalries, and quarrels about the law, for they are useless and futile. After a first and second warning, break off contact with a heretic, realizing that such a person is perverted and sinful and stands self-condemned.  -Titus 3:9-11, NAB

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt called to defend the faith?  With an arsenal of knowledge about apologetics, you feel ready to jump in.  But is that always the best choice to make?

There are definitely times when we may be called to defend the faith.  Spend 10 minutes on Facebook or Twitter, and you will know what I am talking about.  Just last night, the local newspaper posted an article about my parish, and a number of people made negative comments.

I was left with a choice: defend my parish and the decisions of my pastor or realize that it was pointless.  Those commenters were trying to stir a debate and make my parish look bad.  By continuing the argument with people I had never even met, I would have only been adding fuel to the fire.

Today's verse covers exactly this topic.  There are times when we should engage in debates and arguments about religion, politics, and society.  There is a time and place for apologetics.  However, we need to understand the difference between teaching through apologetics and arguing for the sake of arguing.

I love apologetics.  I love talking about the faith.  I even love a good religious debate.  But there are times when we simply need to realize that it's not worth it.  It's better to focus our energies on sharing the love of Christ than wasting our time in endless theological debates.  Just my two cents.
